How to Use AI for Marketing: A Step-by-Step Guide for Business Owners

Can AI replace a marketing team? Almost. Here is how one owner can run social media, scripts, design, video and reporting with Claude and ChatGPT, with screenshots of every step.

If you run a business and wonder how to use AI for marketing without hiring an agency, this guide is for you. A small business used to need four or five people to market itself well: someone for social media, a copywriter, a designer, a video editor and someone to make brochures and lead magnets. Most owners could not afford that team, so marketing got done late at night, or not at all.

AI changes that. With two tools, Claude and ChatGPT, one owner can now do the work of that whole team.

You stay the strategist and the final approver. The AI does the drafting, designing and editing.

This guide is a hands-on tutorial. For each marketing role, you will see which AI marketing tool to use, how to set it up and the exact steps, with screenshots of each platform. By the end, you will have a weekly workflow you can run in a few hours instead of a few days.

Can AI Replace a Marketing Team? Meet Your AI Marketing Team

For most small and growing businesses, AI can now do the hands-on work of a marketing team. Claude handles four of the five roles; ChatGPT handles images. You give each "team member" a brief, review the output and approve it, the same way you would manage real staff.

The trick that makes Claude feel like a team, not a chatbot, is Skills: saved instruction packs that teach Claude a specific job, such as your brand voice for social posts or your script format for reels.

Step 1

Set Up Claude Skills for Marketing (Hire Your AI Team)

A Skill is a saved job description for Claude. You write it once, and Claude follows it every time the task comes up, so you stop re-explaining your brand in every chat.

Throughout this guide we use a sample brand, GlowRoot: natural skincare for Indian skin, selling a Turmeric & Saffron Night Serum at ₹899 to women aged 22 to 35 in metro cities. Swap in your own brand as you follow along. If you are not yet clear who your customer is, read our customer avatar guide first: every skill works better when it knows who it is talking to.

1. Open the Skills page

In Claude, open Settings and click Skills under Customize. You will see skills you created and ready-made ones from Anthropic and partners, such as brand-review, campaign-plan and content-creation. You need a paid Claude plan for Skills.

The Skills page in Claude Settings.

2. Create a new skill with Claude

Click + Add. You can upload a skill file, write one by hand, or pick Create with Claude, the easiest option. Claude interviews you and writes the skill for you.

Three ways to add a skill.

3. Give Claude the job brief

Describe the role the way you would brief a new hire: the brand, product, audience, voice and exactly what you want back.

The job brief for a social media manager skill.

The prompt we used:

Let's create a skill together using your skill-creator skill. The skill is called "social-media-manager" for my D2C skincare brand GlowRoot (natural skincare for Indian skin; hero product: Turmeric & Saffron Night Serum, Rs 899; audience: women 22-35 in Indian metro cities; voice: warm, honest, no hype, a little playful). When I ask for social content, it should produce a weekly Instagram content calendar (table), captions in the brand voice with a hook in the first line, 8-12 relevant hashtags, and a story idea for each post. Draft the skill and show me the SKILL.md.

4. Review the draft skill

Claude writes a SKILL.md file: a name, a description that tells Claude when to use it, your brand essentials, and a checklist it runs before replying. Our draft even banned fairness language and fake reviews, which keeps the brand honest and compliant.

Claude's first draft of the skill.

Read it like a job description. Fix anything that does not sound like you, then save it. Repeat this once for each role: a scriptwriter skill, a brochure skill and so on. That is your team hired.

Step 2

Use AI for Social Media Marketing: Content Calendar and Captions

With the skill in place, one short request gets you a full week of content. You no longer write the brief every time; the skill already knows the brand, voice and format.

1. Ask for the week

We typed one line:

Plan next week's Instagram for GlowRoot. Diwali is on Sunday, so lean into festive glow.

Claude first searched the web to confirm the festival dates (Dhanteras on 6 November, Diwali on 8 November 2026), then built a calendar with a format, content pillar, goal and best posting time for each day.

A full week of posts, planned around the festival dates.

2. Get ready-to-post captions

Under the calendar, Claude wrote each post in full: a reel brief, a caption that opens with a hook, a light touch of Hinglish, hashtags and a story idea.

A ready-to-post caption in the brand voice.

3. Review, tweak, schedule

Read each caption out loud. If it does not sound like you, tell Claude what to change ("shorter", "less Hinglish", "mention free shipping"), then paste the final copy into your scheduler, such as Meta Business Suite.

Tip: when you like a change, ask Claude to add it to the skill, so next week starts from the improved version.

Step 3

Write Reel and Video Scripts with AI

A good reel lives or dies in its first two seconds. Claude writes scripts you can hand straight to whoever holds the camera, even if that is you on your phone.

1. Ask for a shot-by-shot script

We picked Thursday's reel from the calendar and asked:

Write a 30-second Instagram Reel script for Thursday's "Haldi and kesar, the original festive glow" reel. Give me a scroll-stopping hook in the first 2 seconds, then a table with columns: Time, Shot (what we film), On-screen text, Voiceover. End with a soft call to action.

2. Film from the table

Claude returned a hook ("Your nani's festive glow routine? Zero serums."), a mood and music note, and a timed table that tells you exactly what to film, what text to put on screen and what to say.

A 30-second reel script, shot by shot.

What to ask for next: three alternative hooks to test, a Hindi or Tamil version, or a 60-second YouTube Shorts cut of the same idea. Save your favourite format as a "scriptwriter" skill, and every script will come back in it.

Step 4

Create PDFs and Lead Magnets with AI

A free guide in exchange for an email address is one of the cheapest ways for a D2C brand to build a customer list. Claude can design the PDF itself, not just write the words.

1. Describe the document

Tell Claude the title, the pages, what goes on each page, the offer and the colours. We asked:

Create a 2-page PDF lead magnet called "The GlowRoot Festive Skin Survival Guide" that we give away in exchange for an email. Page 1: 5 simple tips to protect your skin during the festive season. Page 2: a simple 3-step night routine featuring the Turmeric & Saffron Night Serum, plus a 10% off code GLOW10. Use warm terracotta and saffron colours, clean layout.

2. Download the finished PDF

In about two minutes, Claude returned an A4 PDF in the brand colours: a header with a saffron sun motif, five numbered tip cards, the serum routine as "The Hero Step" and a coupon for GLOW10. It opens beside the chat, ready to download or save to Google Drive.

The finished lead magnet PDF, opened beside the chat.

Claude also flagged what it left out on purpose: your website URL, Instagram handle and coupon terms, which it would not guess. Add those, then upload the PDF to your email tool as the signup reward.

Same method, other documents: price lists, wholesale catalogues, product brochures, pitch decks (ask for PowerPoint) and order trackers (ask for Excel).

Step 5

Create Ad Images with ChatGPT

For images, ChatGPT is the stronger tool today: it produces photo-quality product shots and spells headline text on the image correctly. Use it for ad creatives, post images and Story graphics.

1. Pick Create image

In ChatGPT, click + next to the message box and choose Create image.

The Create image option in ChatGPT.

2. Describe the ad like an art director

Cover five things: the format (square, 9:16), the product and how it looks, the setting, the light and mood, and the exact text you want on the image, in quotes.

The ad prompt in ChatGPT.

The prompt we used:

Create a square (1:1) Instagram ad image for GlowRoot, a natural skincare brand for Indian skin. Show the hero product: a small amber glass dropper bottle labelled "GlowRoot Turmeric & Saffron Night Serum" on a warm terracotta surface, with fresh turmeric root and saffron strands around it, soft golden evening light. Leave clean space at the top for this headline in an elegant serif font: "Wake up to your glow." Add a small line at the bottom: "Rs 899 | Shop now". Premium, minimal, warm tones.

3. Get the ad

About a minute later, the ad was ready, with the headline, label and price line all spelled correctly.

The finished square ad.

4. Resize and remix in plain English

No design software needed for variations. We replied: "Now make a vertical 9:16 Instagram Story version in the same style. Change the headline to 'Diwali glow, sorted.' and add a few soft diya lights in the background."

The Story version, made with one follow-up message.

Important: AI images are great for ads, mood and social posts, but always show customers your real product in real photos too. Check every label and price before you publish.

Step 6

Make Marketing Videos with AI: Motion Graphics with Claude Code

This is where Claude surprises most people. With Claude Code and the free, open-source HyperFrames framework, Claude builds a motion graphics video as code, then renders it to an MP4. No timeline dragging, no After Effects.

1. Set up once

  • Install the Claude desktop app and open the Code tab (or install Claude Code in a terminal).
  • Make a folder for your videos and open it in Claude Code.
  • Ask Claude to "set up HyperFrames". It installs the HyperFrames skills and creates the project for you. You need Node.js on your computer; Claude can walk you through installing it.

2. Brief the video

We asked for a Diwali promo, in plain English:

Make a 10-second 9:16 motion-graphics promo for GlowRoot (Turmeric & Saffron Night Serum, Rs 899, headline "Diwali glow, sorted."), warm terracotta and saffron palette, kinetic typography, no voiceover. Render an MP4.

Claude planned three beats: the headline punching in word by word, the serum bottle rising with "Turmeric" and "+ Saffron" sliding in, and an end card with the price and a pulsing Shop now button. It then ran a quality check, which caught three issues: an empty first frame (bad as a thumbnail), label text too small to read on a phone, and the closing line leaving the screen too fast. It fixed all three before rendering.

Key frames from the finished promo.

3. Preview and tweak in the Studio

HyperFrames opens a preview Studio in your browser with a timeline of every scene. Scrub through it, click any element to edit it, or just tell Claude what to change ("make the headline bigger", "hold the price longer").

The promo in HyperFrames Studio.

4. Render

When you are happy, Claude renders the final MP4. Our 10-second, 1080 × 1920 video rendered in 19 seconds on a laptop, ready to upload as a Reel or Story. Here it is:

The finished 10-second promo, made entirely by Claude.

Best for: product promos, offer announcements, animated text posts, festival greetings and explainer clips. For your talking-head videos, keep filming yourself on your phone, then ask Claude to add captions and motion graphics on top.

Step 7

Connect AI to Shopify, Google Analytics, Search Console and Meta Ads

So far, Claude has only known what you typed. Connectors give it live access to the tools you already use, such as your Shopify store, analytics and ad accounts. Then it can answer questions from your real numbers instead of guesses.

It is like giving your marketing team logins to your dashboards, except you can see and limit what it touches.

1. Open the Connectors page

In Claude, go to Settings and click Connectors. The Discover tab lists thousands of ready-made connectors, from Google Drive and Gmail to Canva, Notion and Slack. Each one connects with a single click and a sign-in to that service.

The Connectors page in Claude Settings.

2. Connect your store

Search for Shopify and click +. You sign in to your store and approve access, and it shows as Connected.

Shopify, connected.

3. Connect your marketing data

Google Analytics, Google Ads and Meta Ads data usually come in through a marketing-data connector such as Supermetrics or Windsor.ai, which pull many platforms in one go. Ad specialists such as Adspirer can also manage campaigns.

Marketing-data connectors for analytics and ads.

4. Add anything else as a custom connector

When a tool has no ready-made connector, click + Add, then Add custom connector, and paste the server address the provider gives you. This is how our account connected Meta Ads directly (listed as Custom).

Meta Ads, added as a custom connector.
The Add custom connector dialog.

At the time of writing, Google Search Console and Google Business Profile have no official connector in the directory. You can add them through a custom connector or a data partner, or ask an agency to set one up. Only add connectors from developers you trust.

5. Ask your business questions in plain English

Once connected, you stop exporting reports and staring at dashboards. You ask, and Claude pulls the numbers and tells you what to do. The four images below are AI-generated illustrations (made with ChatGPT) using GlowRoot sample data, so you can picture each use case.

Shopify: sales and stock. Ask which products are selling and what is about to run out, before a stock-out costs you a festive weekend.

Illustration with sample data: sales and stock from Shopify.

Google Analytics + Search Console: traffic and SEO. Find pages that get visitors but no sales, and the Google searches you almost rank for. Those are your quickest wins.

Illustration with sample data: traffic and search insights.

Meta Ads: spend and results. Spot the ad set that costs more than it earns, and move that budget to what works, in minutes instead of an afternoon in Ads Manager.

Illustration with sample data: Meta Ads performance.

Google Business Profile: reviews and reputation. Get a weekly summary of new reviews and ready-to-approve replies in your brand voice, with unhappy customers flagged first.

Illustration with sample data: review summary and draft replies.

Ground rules for connectors

  • Start read-only. Let Claude read reports before you let it change campaigns, products or prices.
  • Approve every action. Claude asks before it posts, edits or spends; read each request before you click Allow.
  • Connect only what you need. Fewer connections means less to manage and less data shared.
  • Combine with your skills. A social media skill plus your Shopify connector can plan posts around what is actually in stock.

Your Weekly AI Marketing Routine

Once your skills are set up, a full week of marketing fits into about three and a half focused hours, starting with a quick look at last week's numbers. Here is the routine we would run for GlowRoot (times are approximate).

What it costs

A paid Claude plan and ChatGPT Plus each cost about $20 a month in the US; prices differ by country, so check your local pricing. HyperFrames is free and open source. Together, that is less than a single freelance design job.

Where you still matter

  • Strategy and taste. AI drafts; you decide what your brand stands for and what goes out. If you are unsure what is working today, start with a digital marketing audit and strategy.
  • Facts and claims. Check every price, date, ingredient and offer. Never let AI invent reviews, results or medical claims.
  • Real proof. Use real product photos, real customer stories and your own face on camera. AI visuals support them; they do not replace them.
  • Your voice. Read everything out loud before it ships. If it does not sound like you, change it, then update the skill so it learns.

How to Use AI for Marketing: FAQs

Can AI replace a marketing team?

Use both. Claude is stronger for writing, planning, PDFs, motion graphics video and connecting to your business data through Connectors. ChatGPT is stronger for photo-quality images and ad creatives with text on them.

What are Claude Skills?

Claude Skills are saved instruction packs that teach Claude a specific job, such as your brand voice for social media or your format for reel scripts. You set one up once, and Claude follows it every time that task comes up.

Can AI make marketing videos?

Yes. With Claude Code and the free, open-source HyperFrames framework, Claude can build motion graphics videos such as product promos and offer announcements from a plain-English brief and render them as MP4 files.

How much does it cost to use AI for marketing?

A paid Claude plan and ChatGPT Plus each cost about $20 a month in the US, and prices differ by country. HyperFrames is free. Together, that is usually less than a single freelance design job.

Is it safe to connect Shopify, Google Analytics or Meta Ads to AI?

Connect only what you need, start with read-only access, and approve every action Claude asks to take. Only add connectors from developers you trust.

Do I need technical skills to use AI for marketing?

No. Everything in this guide is done in plain English. The video step uses Claude Code, but Claude does the technical setup for you.

Start With One Role This Week

You do not need to set up the whole team on day one. Pick the job that eats most of your time, usually social media, and build that one skill this week.

Add the scriptwriter next week, then images, then video.

In a month, you will have a marketing team that works whenever you do.
