Your feed is a free masterclass
Every reel that stopped your thumb today was engineered: the hook, the cuts, the product at second 4, the CTA. Watch it as a decoder, not a viewer, and your own reactions become a reusable playbook.
One question drives everything in this blog: why did this work on me?
Why decode: viewer vs decoder
| A viewer says | A decoder says |
|---|---|
| "That was fun" | "Face + text hook in 1s, product at 4s" |
| "Let's go viral" | "Let's reuse the hook that stopped us on Tuesday" |
| "Make it engaging" | "Hook under 1s, a cut every 2s, soft CTA" |
| "I don't like it" | "The hook lands at 2.5s; it needs to land under 1s" |
The payoff: ideas from a library instead of a blank page, sharper briefs for editors, and trends spotted in week one, not week five.
Anatomy of a scroll-stopping reel
A winning reel does five small jobs in order. If one fails, the viewer scrolls and nothing after it is seen.
Six hook types, left to right: Visual · Text · Audio · Question · Bold claim · Pattern interrupt.
- Why is the product at second 4? The problem has just landed, so the product arrives as the answer. At second 0 it feels like an ad; at second 15 most viewers have gone.
- Why that CTA? Soft ("link in bio if you're curious") is for cold viewers. Hard ("40% off, ends tonight") is for warm ones. Decode a CTA by asking who it was aimed at.
The decoder's question bank: what to ask when you analyse a reel
Ask these in the order the viewer lives them: Stop → Stay → Feel → Save → Click → Borrow.
| Stage | Ask yourself |
|---|---|
| Stop | Did it interrupt a pattern? Was the hook visual, text or audio? |
| Stay | What loop did it open that I needed closed? How fast were the cuts? |
| Feel | Why was it relatable? Did it feel like an ad or like content? |
| Save | What value made me want to come back or send it to a friend? |
| Click | When and how did the product appear? Why that CTA, that offer? |
| Borrow | What format and trend is this? Which part fits my brand? |
Save now, decode later: build a reel swipe file
Rule: if a video makes you pause, it goes in the swipe file within 10 seconds. Decode in a weekly batch.
- Save to a named Instagram collection ("Hooks", "UGC ads", "Trends"); check the Meta Ad Library for ad versions.
- Log the link with one name pattern:
Date_Platform_Brand_HookType_Format. - Tag hook type, format, emotion, product-reveal second, CTA, and one line on why I saved it.
- Decode weekly: 60 minutes, 5 to 10 videos. That is 500+ decoded reels a year.
The SODME DECODE framework
Every video our team studies runs through six steps, so two people decoding the same reel reach the same kind of insight.
The step most people skip is O, Observe the why. Naming the psychology (curiosity gap, FOMO, social proof, relatability) is what turns a nice reel into a reusable rule.
| Our rhythm | What happens | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Daily | Everyone saves 3 reels that stopped them | Swipe-file entries |
| Weekly, 60 min | Team decodes 5 to 10 reels together | Distilled rules |
| Monthly | Rising hooks, formats and sounds per category | Client trend report |
| After every post | Results logged against the rule used | Proven rules, not admired ones |

Worked example: a skincare UGC reel
A composite 25-second vitamin C serum ad, decoded beat by beat. Colours match the five stages above.
Distilled rule: daily-pain text hook on a real face → "tried everything" loop → product as the answer at 4s → sensory demo → before/after → offer CTA.
Same rule, different brands. Borrow the structure and timing, never the script.
| Beat | Filter-coffee brand | Budgeting app |
|---|---|---|
| Hook (0s) | "My energy at 9am vs 3pm" | "My balance on the 1st vs the 25th" |
| Loop (2s) | "I tried every energy drink…" | "I tried every spreadsheet…" |
| Product (4s) | Coffee pouch to camera | App screen |
| Proof | Week 1 vs week 3 mornings | Month 1 vs month 3 savings |
| CTA | "First pack ₹99, link in bio" | "Free for 30 days, link in bio" |

Video format cheat sheet: 8 reel formats
| Format | Why it works | Decode this |
|---|---|---|
| UGC | Feels like a friend's tip | Opening line, product entry second |
| Podcast clip | Borrowed authority, debate | The controversial first line |
| Founder-led | People buy from people | The origin and mission beat |
| POV | You are the main character | The exact situation and the twist |
| Before / after | The result is the hook | How long "before" is held |
| Tutorial | Useful later, so saved | Steps and pace per step |
| Green screen | News or a viral post as hook | The source and the opinion added |
| Trend remix | Rides existing attention | The trend's rule, bent for the brand |

Spotting a trend: the same sound, edit or text structure from 3 unrelated accounts in one week. Write its rule in one sentence and adapt the rule, not the video.
From insight to sales
A decode pays off only when it becomes a video that sells. One rule, six steps:
The reel script (filter-coffee brand)
| Time | Visual | On-screen text |
|---|---|---|
| 0:00 | Tired face at desk, yawning | My energy at 9am vs 3pm |
| 0:02 | Fast cuts: energy drink, instant coffee, green tea | I tried everything… |
| 0:04 | Pouch held up to camera | Then I found this |
| 0:08 | Slow-mo decoction pour | Real filter coffee in 2 minutes |
| 0:15 | Split screen: slumped vs smiling at 3pm | Week 1 vs Week 3 |
| 0:22 | Pouch with price card | First pack ₹99, link in bio |
Swipe sideways to see the whole table.
Write 3 hook versions and keep the rest identical, so the ad test isolates the hook.
Match the video to the audience
| Audience | Pattern that fits | CTA |
|---|---|---|
| Cold (never heard of you) | UGC, POV, trend, podcast clip | Soft: "link in bio if curious" |
| Warm (engaged) | Demo, tutorial, before/after, founder | Medium: "see how it works" |
| Hot (visited, carted) | Testimonial + offer, FAQ reel | Hard: "20% off ends tonight" |
Swipe sideways to see the whole table.
Test hooks on cold audiences, scale the winner, retarget its viewers, and log the result against the rule.
Your reel decode worksheet (free template)
One per video, 5 minutes. Copy it into Notion or a sheet.
Link / Brand / Format:

STAY Loop opened, cut speed, captions?
FEEL Relatable moment + emotion:

Avoid: copying the video instead of the pattern · decoding only your own industry · writing "it's good" instead of how it made you feel.
